    • A handgun of your choice (semi-automatic striker-fired/hammer-fired or revolver)
    • At least two magazines (if revolver, speedloaders) with mag carriers (universal or correctly fitted to your magazines) worn outside the waistband.
    • A firm kydex hip holster fitted to your make/model of handgun worn outside the waistband.  New shooters are not permitted to draw from appendix holsters or from inside the waistband.
    • A thick sturdy belt.  While the quality of your gun belt will ultimately matter in the long run, a simple, sturdy belt in most cases is adequate for completing this course.  See examples: We The People Holsters, Vedder Holsters
    • Ammunition, 100 rounds, in the correct caliber for your firearm (instructor or range)
    • Eye protection/glasses (instructor or range)
    • Hearing Protection (instructor or range)

    Important information about holsters:

It is required that you have a quality holster, typically made of kydex, fitted specifically for your gun and 1-3 mag pouches for training worn OUTSIDE THE WAISTBAND (OWB) with the goal to eventually choose a holster and mag pouch that you will use for concealed carry/everyday carry AND for training. You will need a sturdy belt on which to attach a clip or paddle holster of your choosing.

There are many brands, large and small, to choose from for around $40 – $80. Check your gun manufacturer’s website as a first look.

    Mandatory:

    1. The holster must completely cover the trigger guard.
    2. It should be fitted to your gun make.
    3. It should retain the gun but be easy to draw
    4. It should not collapse after the gun is drawn

You will need to select the level of retention. Unless your job duties demand otherwise, choose a holster that is at a level 1 retention or no retention/adjustable retention (just friction), that allows you to draw rapidly but still holds the gun securely. For everyday carry, no retention other than friction is common practice. A holster with a level 1 quick release lever is also an option.

Students will draw their gun from the holster during the dry fire/classroom portion of the course. This course does not provide live-fire draw (unless training at an outdoor range). The practical will be conducted on an indoor square range which does not permit holster draw.

Revolvers: For students shooting a revolver, 1-2 speed loaders is mandatory.
